6. "Bad Lieutenant"

In more than one scene, Abel Ferrara's searing portrait of Catholic guilt run amok in one very dirty cop conjures the same hypnotically nauseating effect as a really bad car wreck (the fun keeps coming, kids - a remake by Werner Herzog is on the way). Strangely enough, the least openly misanthropic of these moments is also one of the most unsetting: an unclothed, self-loathing Harvey Keitel standing before a mirror, racked with sobs, making a sound like a wounded seal.
