From the 5 O'Clock Somewhere: T.T. Murph's edition

A few weeks back, during our annual Coldest Beer in Columbus competition, staff members started raving about a tiny Irish pub located on the fringes of Bexley.

Round after round, stories came back about individual flat-screen TVs, delicious pizza and frosty beer. Our experienced beer-testers were familiar with most bars suggested by readers for the 2009 contest, but this East Side hangout was something unfamiliar and noteworthy.

In all respects, T.T. Murph's checks out. The Irish-ness of the pub ends with a few shamrock decals, but what it lacks in Emerald Isle authenticity, it more than makes up for with friendly service and Midwestern charm.

Inside, late on a Wednesday night last week, I found students, young professionals and a few dudes sharing laughs and pitchers.

Most patrons will opt for one of the light-style American lagers on tap, which are served at about 36.9 degrees, according to Alive science. The sophisticated set enjoys Hoster Gold Top, Guinness or a few other imported drafts.

Domestic pints cost $3, fancier brews a few bucks more. Mixed drinks start at $3.75.

A full bar menu includes wings (10 for $7.25), subs ($6.25 for the Italian) and salads ($7.50 for an antipasto). The main event, though, is the pizza. You can grab a small one-topping for $11, and all pies are half-price on Mondays.

The bar's motto is spelled out in a one-of-a-kind neon bar sign that reads "Bud n Pizza." It delivers.

With pizza and pitcher in hand, check out a small patio for smokers, a long wooden bar or one of several booths, each home to personal flat-screen TV. Anywhere you choose inside this colorful, well-worn haunt has an easy, good-time vibe.

While not the cheapest dive in town, Murph's is a place you absolutely cherish if you attend nearby Capital University or hold a job in Bexley. It's worth a drive from other neighborhoods, too.

"I think it's a safe, warm, family feeling, man," said Matthew Murphy, owner of the bar for 11 years. "I grew up all my life in this neighborhood. I wouldn't trade it for anything."
