"You have to be able to walk that line between facilitator of fun and somebody who knows there's a line you can't cross."

Neighborhood: North Campus

Hometown: Heath

Years behind the bar: 8

What makes a good bartender?

You have to be able to walk that line between facilitator of fun and somebody who knows there's a line you can't cross. You have to be security and the stripper behind the bar - the fun person they're here to see, and you have to be able to crack the whip when they've had too much.

If you can be quick with the quip and quick with the whip, you're going to be a good bartender.

What do you like to do when you're not at work?

I read a lot. I'll go to an art opening, a new bar, the old bar. I'll go see a movie or some live skits. I try to keep a good perspective on things around town - especially as a bartender, because it's your job to know what's going on.

What do you read?

Howard Zinn is definitely one of the foremost if you want a nice base of what's going on in your country. Fareed Zakaria or Joshua Cooper Ramo for current political ideas about why the world is the way it is and how we can change it. But I'm also a Tolkien fan, so I love my fiction just as much as I love my commentary on the woes of the world.

Where do you like to go to get a drink?

I prefer Park Street Tavern or Patrick J's. We go to Big Bang every once in a while. But I try to hit a lot of different places.

What do you drink?

I like straight, good tequila or good whiskey. My favorite tequila is Milagro Silver. I tend to go for the Woodford Reserve, or if I'm going for Irish whiskey, it's hard to beat Jameson. I'm an Irish bartender, so I drink heavy.

What's the best concert you've seen recently?

For just the pure spectacle and the vibe in the crowd, the Flaming Lips put on a hell of a show. That was an impressive show.

What show are you looking forward to in Rocktober?

Definitely Them Crooked Vultures. I've only heard a snippet of them and they sound like a cross between Queens of the Stone Age and Led Zeppelin, and it's hard to go wrong right there.
