During the past several months, it was hard to tell whether the Bogey Inn was open, as the sign outside saying so could rarely be trusted. A call this week to the Dublin standby finally set things straight:

"The Bogey's back. How can I help you?"

Back, indeed. The classic Dublin sports bar has been hosting customers for several weeks and will celebrate its grand opening Friday, Oct. 9, with new owners, an upgraded menu and a coherent vision for the haunt operational in various forms since the 1920s.

"We're bringing back the day-to-day operations of a full-service restaurant," said co-owner Jon "Tony" Fenstermaker, who salutes patrons from behind the bar with a handshake made firm as an Ohio State linebacker during the '80s. "We're going to turn it back into a fun, family-friendly, sports-themed place."

In some ways, the Bogey hasn't changed much from the place beloved over the years by Muirfield golfers, football fans and others who prefer a bar where people know your name.

Fenstermaker hopes to attract casual diners into a main bar room, Little League teams into an airy party space and summer cocktailers to a giant covered patio adjacent to four sand volleyball courts. You'll find a return to fresh food (try a great steak sandwich for $7) and $2 domestic bottles and drafts at all times.

In other ways, things will never be the same.

A quieter, laid-back room in the rear will become a wine store with to-go sales and tables for tastings. Regular concerts will be scheduled around sporting events, and private parties will be a focus.

The owners have a plan to build an upscale putt-putt course modeled after famous golf holes, and a 70-acre parking lot used for Memorial Tournament overflow is getting ready to hold big rock shows and other special events.

"This is a classic place," Fenstermaker said. "There's a lot of value to it as a destination."
