It's hard to beat a snazzy night out snacking on delicious food and sipping on fine wines while benefiting a wonderful charity, too. Well, the 16th-annual Signature Chefs Auction this Monday evening presents Central Ohioans with another splendid opportunity to party with a higher purpose.

That purpose is the March of Dimes. Since 1938, this crucial organization has been fighting hard for the health of babies and mothers, battling the causes and outcomes of birth defects and premature births.

For the Signature Chefs event - which will be held in the Easton-area Aladdin Shrine - the March of Dimes' aim is to raise $150,000. To help reach that goal, a lot of great-looking enticements are at hand.

First of all, the $100 ticket entitles grazers and gourmets to rove around the banquet hall and sample the terrific fare of - as well as chat up - chefs from the Refectory, Z Cucina, Vittoria, J. Liu, Eddie Merlot's and 13 other notable gustatory palaces.

But the price of admission also includes a chance to drink the wares of -and get food pairing suggestions from - 18 different wine distributors who will each be bringing in a formidable selection of their quaff-gratifying products.

While this cocktail-hour reception goes on (5:30-7:30 p.m.) attendees will have the chance to make silent auction bids on fabulous gourmand-oriented packages. After that period elapses, a live formal auction will be held with more primo fun-time packages up for grabs.

Here's a couple of teasers: Schakolad will bring in, set up, completely oversee and clean up after a wild chocolate fountain party for 150 lucky chocoholics; McCormick and Schmick's is offering a deluxe, five-course chef's-table dinner for 10 with matching wines and limousine service to and from; the Hilton at Polaris is offering three one-hour spa sessions plus a special five-course wine-paired dinner for six, plus three deluxe sleeping rooms and breakfast for six the next day.

See you at the Shrine.
