Neighborhood: German Village
Years behind the bar: 5
What do you like about bartending?
I've waited tables before, but it's just not as fun because it's more, "yes sir, no sir." You can't joke around as much. It's nice to be able to relax and be yourself and socialize with people. And I don't have to be up at eight o'clock in the morning.
Where do you go to get a drink?
I'm actually here a lot when I'm not working. It's nice to be on the same side as the people you serve and have a drink with them. You get to know people better because it's totally different.
I go to Claddagh a lot. I'll stop in there and have a couple drinks. I go to Gresso's. I used to live in the Short North, so I used to hang out a lot down there, but I don't really make it there as much because there's some good bars around German Village.
Which spot is better for bar hopping?
I think down here is a little more laid-back, but it's easier to bar hop in the Short North because the bars are a lot closer together. I'm more of a neighborhood bar type of person. I like to go somewhere I can just relax and not feel pressured to feel like you have dress a certain way.
What do you drink?
I prefer Jim Beam Black, but not a lot of places have it, so I'll drink Beam and 7 Up. I also like to drink a lot of red wine, but it's hard to find good wine in neighborhood bars. So usually I'll have to stop at [the store] after I hit the bars. [laughs]
What does it take to be a good bartender?
Obviously, you have to make a good drink and know what you're doing, but a lot of it is the way you talk to people. You have to have a sense of humor and not be uptight or rude. You can't be judgmental, which is hard because everyone is.
What's the crowd like here?
We get a lot of neighborhood people, which is nice, and a good crowd of regulars. A lot of people that come here on a regular basis are just really friendly and will sit there and shoot the s--- with you.
