The current exhibit at the Elijah Pierce Gallery features traditional African sculpture as well as modern, Western-influenced work inspired by native styles. A collection of life-size sculptures on loan from the Keith Neal African Art Gallery includes pieces from Cameroon, Congo, Ivory Coast, Mali and Nigeria in West Africa. They're complemented by the work of Woodrow Nash, an Akron artist influenced by African and European sculptures from 15th-century Benin to 18th-century Art Nouveau. Nash uses multiple mediums (stoneware, earthenware, terra cotta and porcelain) to explore the masculine and feminine form and reveal the essential "spirit" of man.
