Some of The Shadow Side's latest offering, "Here, In the Now," injects radio-ready pop balladry with Get Up Kids overtones and epic scope. Elsewhere, its emo connections are more explicit, with minor chords, heart-rending wails and post-hardcore riffage straight out of 1998. There are a few moments of bliss, like the dynamic mid-section of "Shooting Star," but this is mostly unmemorable music steeped in a genre that feels hopelessly dated, despite the album title's claims otherwise.
