In the technology world, smaller is sometimes better. Everything's getting smaller these days, from computers to cameras to cell phones.

And now, there's even a scanner so small it can fit in your pocket. The PlanOn DocuPen Xtreme X05, resembling a giant-sized pen, is available for $370 at planon.com, or you can pre-order for $300 at jr.com.

Gadget Spot first reported on the DocuPen Xtreme three years ago. The latest version offers higher resolution, more memory and one slick feature that makes it very tempting to anyone who needs to scan documents on the go and doesn't find a cell phone snapshot to be an ideal solution.

The older model scans documents in color at a maximum of 400 dpi (dots per inch) resolution. The Xtreme is capable of color scans up to 600 dpi resolution.

The older model had 8 MB of flash memory onboard. The Xtreme has a 200 MHz computer processor, 64 MB of onboard memory and the ability to upgrade with optional MicroSD memory cards.

But most impressively, the Xtreme adds the slick new feature of Bluetooth connectivity, allowing you to send the documents you scan to your BlackBerry or Windows Mobile (versions 5.0 or 6.0) smartphone, laptop and some Bluetooth-enabled printers.

This gadget is easy to use. As you slowly roll it over a document lying on a flat surface, the image is captured. An OLED screen at the slim end of the device guides you as to the speed of your scan, as well as provides info on battery life and memory.

Like its predecessor, the latest version of the DocuPen scans a full page width in a single scan. If you don't have a Bluetooth-enabled computer, or if you simply want to use a wired connection, a USB cable for charging the device also connects it to a computer for off-loading scanned documents.

All the software you need to communicate with your portable devices or manipulate the scanned documents in your computer is included with this product.
