From the Bar profile: Black Horse Bar & Grill edition

About five years ago, my buddy rented a flat in Grandview. Before we'd go out and sometimes when we'd come home, he and I would notice a bar very near his Heritage Apartments place.

Tucked quietly near Northwest Boulevard and North Star Avenue, his apartment complex seemed like an unappealing place to grab a beer, so Black Horse Bar & Grill went undiscovered.

Then, during the past several weeks, I met two rad dudes on separate occasions. I asked where they held court, and their answer came back the same - the Black Horse.

They told me I should check it out, and I did.

What I found was a supremely friendly neighborhood joint that trades in first-name-basis service and worn-in class. Some might think it's in need of a fresh coat of paint, but I'm sold on any place that pours cold drafts, has a patio and serves fish tacos on Wednesday nights.

"I was drinking here back when it was a steak-and-ribs joint," said bartender Bill Weeks, whose impeccable refill timing bordered on precognition. "I've allegedly been a bartender here for three years."

Weeks said that many apartment residents head down for a pre-game tipple or a nightcap before turning in. For those outside of stumble-home distance, it's a great place to hit before catching a show at The Treehouse or heading to downtown Grandview for fancier fare.

The main room has a short belly-up bar, a jukebox and a handful of private tables near some greenhouse-style windows. In a back spot you probably wouldn't find on your own, there's a pair of pool tables and some tube TVs. A patio wraps around two walls.

Whatever room you're in, people are happy to chat - most often about how awesome they find the Black Horse.

"People bring in their own glasses, their own cozies," regular Leah Mongolier said. "Literally, everyone here is so friendly."
