1:10 a.m.: We arrive in Uptown Westerville just in time for the rush. Every day at 1 a.m., Schneider's Bakery opens to serve doughnuts, coffee, milk and bread to a swarm of Otterbein students. Some are on study break; others are drunk snacking.

"I always get the glazed doughnut and chocolate milk," says Ira Chapman, who stops in with fellow Danville native Amanda Vess to kick off a slow trickle of customers. Soon dozens of students pour into the tiny storefront.

"It's kind of a big deal on campus," Vess explains.

Owner Jeff Hamler bought the place in 1987 after beginning work there as a teen in 1974. Now he and his wife Debbie show up at 3 p.m. daily to start baking for the night rush, and they usually don't leave until 4 a.m. Things are even more hectic this week because their son is getting married Saturday.

That hasn't kept them from making some mean doughnuts. Jodi samples a jelly-filled concoction, while I opt for glazed. Way better than Krispy Kreme.
