Alive staffers wanted to see if we could tell the difference between top-shelf and well bottles in a blind taste test of liquor whose merit is measured by the least amount of taste. The results were pretty surprising.

Alive staffers wanted to see if we could tell the difference between top-shelf and well bottles in a blind taste test of liquor whose merit is measured by the least amount of taste. The results were pretty surprising.

The contenders:

Ciroc: High-end French vodka derived from grapes and endorsed by P. Diddy. $35

Tanqueray: Did you know the gin guys made a vodka too? $19

Kamchatka: The best-selling spirit in Ohio is your most common well. $8.50

Grey Goose: French vodka specifically designed for the American market - sounds fishy. $33

Smirnoff: They tout themselves as the "world's best-selling vodka." $13

The results:

First place: Ciroc

Tasting notes: "The best! I would've guessed it was flavored vodka, maybe something citrusy. The only one I would sip straight."-Shelley Mann

"Delicious - detected an infusion of some sort. Great on the rocks or mixed."-Nikki Davis

"A warmer, citrusy nose preceded a very pleasant taste. It was almost as if it was mixed with something fruity."-John Ross

Second place: Tanqueray Sterling

Tasting notes: "Clean and crisp without that pesky alcohol burn. This is what you want to fill the water bottle up with before your jog."-Brad Keefe

"Crisp and smooth with a slight aftertaste."-Jesse Tigges

"Smooth, but lacks punch. Might be deadly for the same reason."-Nikki Davis

Third place: Kamchatka

Tasting notes: "Smooth and warm, with a full mouthfeel."-Brian Lindamood

"Not too much of a bite, and a slight sweetness."-Jesse Tigges

"Not feeling this one. Tasted like NyQuil."-Nikki Davis

Tied for fourth: Grey Goose

Tasting notes: "Me likes. Perfect on the rocks."-Nikki Davis

"Tastes like burning."-Jesse Tigges

"Am I supposed to drink this or pour it on a skinned knee?"-Brad Keefe

Tied for fourth: Smirnoff

Tasting notes: "Tastes like Purell."-Brian Lindamood

"The worst! Tastes the most like rubbing alcohol."-Shelley Mann

"I know vodka aims for flavorlessness, but this has some, and it ain't bad."-Brad Keefe
