In the 21st century, that means lots of specials on Sam Adams and Liberty Tavern's own Patriot Ale on tap. And some well-rested patrons complaining about Ohio taxes.

Patriot Ale is crafted by the Boston brewer for Liberty Tavern, an arrangement that came about because the pub sells more Sam Adams than just about anyone in Central Ohio.

It's a bright amber ale, extremely smooth and just slightly sweet and citrusy. It goes well with the tavern's burgers and creative pub grub (try the Reuben, served on a warm pretzel roll).

Lifting a pint of Patriot Ale is also a refreshing way to celebrate your independence this weekend (the bar is open on July 4) or to commemorate Liberty Day on Aug. 14, when Liberty Tavern celebrates the 1765 protests against the British Stamp Act.
