Or, you could be in and out of the store in a few minutes. The space is organized into what Hurt called "color rooms," so if you know what color accessory you're looking for, you can beeline right to that section.

But most shoppers like to take their time at the Texas-based chain's first Ohio location, which opened in mid-May.

That's likely because the prices are so cheap - the average item is about $13, Hurt says - that people feel inclined to make sure they don't overlook anything.

That means checking out shelves of shoes and handbags, racks of necklaces, and nooks stuffed with scarves, rings and gift items such as candles. The store also has clothing: for summer, mostly patterned, ruffled tops and sundresses with braided straps.

The variety is what's most astounding - there must be about a dozen purses in the green section, and few are alike: an oversized kelly-green tote, a jungle-green wallet, a ruffled, neon clutch.

Jewelry spans styles from the bedazzled to faux pearls to ethnic looks, not to mention some of the most oversized rings and bangles, probably, ever.

Charming Charlie began in 2004 as a clothing store with accessories, and the Polaris location - tucked away in the mall's new outdoor "lifestyle center" - is the first to emphasize accessories. Two additional stores are expected to open in Columbus during the next year.

The brand is better known out west, Hurt says, but people in Columbus are becoming hooked.

As if on cue, a shopper walks through the door and responds, "I'm from Texas!" to Hurt's "Welcome to Charming Charlie. Have you shopped with us before?"
