Geometric ethnic patterns

Stripes, chevrons, concentric squares: Simultaneously graphic, ancient, vibrant and modern.

Lone Wolf and Cub

Starting with those after-school "Kung Fu Weeks," I've been a sucker for poorly dubbed, imported butt-kickery. The LW&C set is different. It's everything I never knew I wanted in a martial arts film. Things like historical accuracy. Spectacularly over-the-top mayhem. Exceptional lip-to-coherent-sentence ratio. A lethally tricked-out baby cart. This is a series for the ages.

Books and magazines

Print may be dying, but I bet I've got a hard copy somewhere.

"Still Bill"

I haven't stopped talking about this Bill Withers documentary for months now. Loaded with personal insights and history (Bill's lifelong challenge with stuttering, and a professional singing career that didn't start until he was 32), excellent vintage music segments (including an unexpected clip of Gil Scott-Heron's "The Bottle"), and Bill's down-home, old-school humor, Bill - the man and the movie - are awesome.

Marigold. Saffron. School bus yellow.

I fall in and out of love with turquoise, Kelly green and magenta, but warm yellows are golden.
