When "American Dad" premiered in 2005, I never thought it would succeed. Not because spin-offs rarely do, but because it was a terrible show. Every character was a poor man's version of their "Family Guy" counterparts.

Well, as I caught more recent episodes sporadically last season, I was impressed by how far "American Dad" had come. The writing was significantly better, and much like "Family Guy" embracing Stewie and Brian's popularity, "Dad" now showcased Roger the alcoholic alien, the best part of the show.

In the premiere, the best jokes come from Roger, but overall it's pretty funny - even if the humor is an acquired taste.
