To quell any confusion, the guy Ben Folds recently made an album with was not fellow pianist Bruce Hornsby but rather British novelist Nick Hornby of "High Fidelity" and "Fever Pitch" fame.

To quell any confusion, the guy Ben Folds recently made an album with was not fellow pianist Bruce Hornsby but rather British novelist Nick Hornby of "High Fidelity" and "Fever Pitch" fame.

The pair's album "Lonely Avenue" finds Folds setting Hornby's character studies to some of the more sophisticated and satisfying music of his post-Ben Folds Five career. It's a pleasure to hear him applying his talents to lyrics outside of his usual goofy-sentimental fare.

But the best thing Folds did with Hornby didn't actually make the cut. "Things You Think," which also features YouTube celebs Pomplamoose, is a remarkably simple little chorus on repeat, interspersed with humorous and cutting spoken word bits by Hornby: "That's why I'm not Dickens - kids. Dickens' wife would have done the school run. I'm all for feminism, but it's cost me my one shot at immortality."

Unfortunately, Hornby won't be at LC Pavilion Monday, but hopefully his accented quips will be piped in anyway.
