When did you grow your first mustache?

When did you grow your f irst mustache ?

The first one I had was in high school, where the administrators - the priests, it was a Catholic school - made me shave it off. So I shaved it off one side at a time over a few days. They weren't really appreciative of that idea.

Have you ever shaved it since ?

When I graduated from high school, I grew it at that point and only shaved it off once. It was really a fluke. I went to bed, and I woke up the next morning, looked in the mirror and scared the hell out of myself.

Why wear a mustache?

It's just who I am. I will have a mustache until the day I die, and I'll carry it to my grave. If I'm buried, I'll make sure they trim it right. [Laughs.]

Have you ever rocked other styles?

I've had everywhere from the Fu Manchu to the "M.A.S.H." mustache look. Back in 1992, I had a broad-based mustache - very thick, very wide. I said, "I need to change up."

I saw a picture of Adam Clayton Powell, who was formerly a congressman out of New York. He kind of looks like somebody who came out of my family. He had a nice trimmed-up mustache. I've kept it trimmed and manicured ever since.

How do you maintain it ?

When I shave, I always trim it up, so some days it's trimmer than others. It depends upon how rushed I am that day. Sometimes the symmetry's not right. I use scissors, man, scissors and a razor.

Do you have a name for it?

This is the Coleman mustache. I've trademarked it.
