Studio Rouge sits above a gym, but the sultry space is for women who don't want to be downstairs on an elliptical.

"This is a workout for those sick of being on a treadmill," said owner Carolyn Cull.

It's also "not for the faint of heart," men or anyone under 18.

The studio is lined with mirrors, and six metal poles are anchored throughout. Studio Rouge opened last weekend and offers chair, burlesque and pole dancing classes.

The tutorials, each held once a week for one hour, start at $79 for four weeks. The studio also offers bachelorette party packages and Valentine's Day specials.

"Nothing lewd," Cull said. "The point is to get in a great alternative workout."

Pole dancing is killer upper-body training, Cull said. Maximum core strength is also developed through learning to look graceful while sliding down a slippery pole.

Cull took dance classes as a kid and was "totally hooked" after discovering the fun of belly- and pole-dancing workouts. She hopes her passion for the dance form spreads.

"We want to provide quality dance instruction and a good time," she said. "There's no point in taking up something new if you're not loving it."

Fitness fads we miss

Dancing exotically to develop a sculpted body and confident outlook is one workout trend we hope never plateaus like these former crazes.

Jazzercise. Getting physical to catchy music sounds fun. However, those iridescent leotards the '80s can keep.

Over-the- top personalities. The acerbity of today's famous trainers (i.e. Jackie Warner, Jillian Michaels) does not compare to the endearing crazy of Richard Simmons and Suzanne Somers.

Roller- skating. To blame for this '70s fitness fad's demise is not so much a national hatred of disco, but sketchy rinks with scary dark corners.

Vibrating belts. You always feel better after a workout, effective or not. Bring back the "workout" where the only requirement is to stand there and get shaken.
