The story behind 4th St. Bar & Grill was enough to catch anyone's interest when it opened in August: Ali and Ismail Alshahal opened up a bar and restaurant in the former home of their father's carry-out store.

The story behind 4th St. Bar & Grill was enough to catch anyone's interest when it opened in August: Ali and Ismail Alshahal opened up a bar and restaurant in the former home of their father's carry-out store.

That kind of touching tale buys you a month ... maybe. Now their place speaks for itself.

Six months in, the Alshahal brothers have put together one of the best operations on Campus - a genuine neighborhood spot that emerged from an abandoned storefront on North Fourth Street.

Students and after-work adults already have taken notice, and this spring should prove to be especially lively. A fantastic front patio is primed for warm-weather sipping, and the Crew Union will be coming in en masse for all away Columbus Crew games.

But even if you hate soccer and sun, the happy hour is reason enough to make the trip.

The booze

Rotating daily specials include everything from Long Island iced teas to bottles by the bucket, but you can find low-price liquor and swill at every Campus bar.

The bar's main happy-hour magnet is a collection of glistening taps behind the bar. All drinks are half-off during happy hour, including the extensive draft lineup.

Since the price is right, try an unfamiliar few - perhaps the in-your-face bitterness of Troegs HopBack Amber Ale ($2.50 during happy hour) or the oaky, potent Kentucky Bourbon Barrel Ale ($3.25 during happy hour).

The food

Though familiar to most drinkers, entrees and appetizers on the 4th St. menu are prepared with fresh ingredients and more care than the fare at your average pub.

To sop up the high-powered suds, try the 4th Street Nachos ($2.50 during happy hour), a batch of thick, expertly fried chips that never wilt beneath a generous dose of melted cheese, salsa and fresh veggies.

Follow them with the equally good-but-guilty Chili Cheese Fries ($3 during happy hour), which feature the sturdy steak-cut variety beneath a stew that doesn't skimp on the beef or beans.

For a change of pace, the bar offers daily food specials, including $1 tacos on Friday.
