Slice of Clever Crow Pizza, $3.50
Clever Crow is one of the newest players on the local pizza scene, and this high flyer is easily one of the most eccentric and best piemakers out there. Basically a one-man operation baking pies and slices out of a Short North rock club (Circus), its pizza is unlike any other 'za you've ever eaten.
That's because, as the Crow flies, it prefers to make its dough primarily out of cornmeal. This results in a yellowish, complex and mildly corny-sweet crust with a tantalizing tang to it, and a texture somewhat like a shortbread.
Said crust is thick and sturdy - especially at the edges - and therefore guaranteed never to go soggy even when piled high with Clever Crow's terrific toppings like homemade sausage (with wine and fennel seed), caramelized onions, or peppers and veggies roasted and pickled on premises.
