With Big Woody's grand opening last weekend, the Arena District gets something it's been missing - a sports bar with a mechanical bull.
That's right: The bull from the space's former party house, The Lodge Bar, is still there. Much of the previous resident's motif also remains, albeit with some welcomed changes.
Sure, there are still plenty of reasons for students (21 and older, of course) to head down to the massive wood-laden den for shots and pitchers, but a full menu of classic pub grub and a happy hour from 5-9 p.m. caters to working stiffs looking to kick back on weeknights.
Abundant flat-screens, easily viewable from booths, high-top tables and two long bars, give Woody's the sports-bar feel. It would make a fun hang-out spot on football Saturdays or a good place to grab a bite before a Clippers game.
On the menu, Woody's offers seven signature pizzas with all the traditional toppings. There are some nonstandard bar varieties, as well, like spicy margherita and Buffalo chicken ($16).
Also offered are paninis ($8), appetizers and wings in eight different sauces ($5 for six, $9 for 12). The Buffalo chicken dip - Buffalo sauce, diced chicken, cream cheese, blue cheese, celery - served with tortilla chips is a particularly good appetizer.
At the bar, a selection of drafts ($4-$5) is complemented by nearly two-dozen bottles plus cans of domestics ($3.50) and imports ($4.50). It's a healthy selection of suds - everything from PBR and Strongbow cans to a craft selection, Dogfish Head's 60 Minute IPA.
Woody's sports a specialty drink menu sure to be popular with the college revelers who will filter in later in the evening, when Woody's turns up the music and the mechanical bull starts kicking.
The 60 oz. Big Woody ($12), which claims to be "the stiffest drink in town," comes in three flavors - Grape, Super Nerd and Ruby Red - and is perfect for a few sorority sisters to share.
Woody's also gives you the chance to feel like a kid again in their game room, which has a couple of Pop-A-Shot machines, arcade games and a ping-pong table. Game on.
