About the brewery

Southern Tier began brewing in 2002 on the shores of Chautauqua Lake, a beautiful resort lake in western New York where I vacationed every summer for more than 25 years. Regardless of my sentimental attachment, this brewery deserves your attention. It offers 11 year-round brews and seasonal selections that started populating more Ohio bottle shops after the brewery expanded in 2009.

About the beer

India pale ales remain common fare among American breweries, and the best beer-makers are known for producing unique versions that go bigger, badder and bolder. Southern Tier's 2XIPA definitely follows suit - and combines three types of malted barley, four varieties of hops and a bit of attitude. It's a great way to branch out from your standard pale ale.

Why to drink it

The 2XIPA is a rare beer that's instantly loveable and continually intriguing. Smells of lemon, grapefruit and other citrusy goods bounce from the bottle, while other hops emerge soon after to provide a robust, bitter flavor. The finish is quick and amazingly clean - a welcome feature for people new to strong IPAs.

What to drink it with

Hops are known for accentuating spice, but you probably shouldn't soothe torched taste buds with a brew boasting an 8.2 percent ABV. Try grabbing a gourmet pizza with basil, fresh mozzarella and red-pepper flakes.
