And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead with Surfer Blood

One thing Surfer Blood's ace debut "Astro Coast" made clear is they're students of the indie rock canon. So frontman John Paul Pitts undoubtedly trained his ear on And You Will Know Us By the Trail of Dead circa 2002, when their heart-on-sleeve art rock masterpiece "Source Tags and Codes" was all the rage.

Now the bands are touring together - Surfer Blood still taking "Astro Coast" victory laps while Trail of Dead supports prog-punk epic "Tao of the Dead," their best work in nearly a decade. If "Tao" is not as shout-to-heaven thrilling as their signature album, it's at least a welcome gust of breath for fans weighed down by a streak of strikeout LPs. It's also a worthy reason to brave The Basement on Thursday.

Zombie Nation

The former site of Fabric/Long Street Live/Club Ice has been revived as Long Street District, and with the club's opening comes a weekly Thursday party called DanceOn. Headlining the inaugural installment will be Zombie Nation, the German techno project responsible for synth-powered jock jam "Kernkraft 400." (Look it up; you'll recognize it.) A powerful slate of locals including roeVy, Pvt Link, Carma & Attak and DJ Axcess rounds out the bill.

Plain White T's

Before they were Plain White T's: Acoustic Pop One-and-a-half Hit Wonders, they were Plain White T's: Pop-Punk Basement Heroes. Debate which version is superior all you want, but recent single "Rhythm of Love," one of the first to feature vocals by guitarist Tim Lopez, dispels any notions of a return to the days of yore. (Think Sugar Ray circa "Someday.") Maybe they'll throw old-school fans a bone Thursday at the Newport.
