I once dated a guy who said he couldn't stand jazz because the notes were all over the place and it didn't make sense. We don't date anymore. Jazz isn't hard to understand; simply listen, absorb and enjoy. This weekend offers an excellent opportunity to find new sounds, in both the jazz and blues persuasions.

Jazz isn't hard to understand; simply listen, absorb and enjoy. This weekend offers an excellent opportunity to find new sounds, in both the jazz and blues persuasions.

Highlights include Chicago trumpeter Pharez Whitted (9 p.m. Friday), bluesmen Watermelon Slim and Super Chikan (9:15 p.m. Saturday), and local legend Willie Phoenix and his psychedelic blues rock (9:30 p.m. Friday). Everyone will find something that makes their heads bop and hips sway during the three-day festival.

And do seize a chance to mix food and music: Mezzo Italian Kitchen and Wine will serve a jazz brunch Sunday from 11 a.m.-2:30 p.m.
