Airship Archon is a group of local steampunk enthusiasts who get together regularly to role-play as their time-traveling ship's characters. Steampunk celebrates innovation, progress and the future while harkening back to the style and imagination of the past.

The steampunk look is created with the Victorian era's fashion mainstays topped with science fiction and industrial accessories. Women in lace gloves and petticoats wear aviator goggles and earrings that look like the switch Igor throws to give Frankenstein life. Men sport suspenders and futuristic timepieces.

"It's a romanticized version of a time period we all love," said Archon member Lisa Lombardi, "but we're not bound by the same rules and restrictions they were."

"Like race and gender," said Archon leader James Anthony Ballard-Smoot.

Other Archon members say they're attracted to the look because it lets them dress up without the pressure of costume accuracy like in anime or period role-playing.

"You stop looking at things as what they are," said Ballard-Smoot, "and start looking at things as what they could be."

Five members of the 80-person strong Archon crew took a break from their time travels to pose for us and talk about their costumes at The Depot on Old Henderson Road in a restored rail car from the 1860s.
