Only at Columbus' most rock 'n' roll club can a consenting adult receive a smack across the face with her shot of whiskey. Sick and twisted? Hell, yeah. And a great story, too.

Carabar co-owner Ron Barker tells a great yarn about a group of buddies years ago concocting the Hate Crime and other similarly cruel-to-be-kind shots. The Hate Crime, though, would be enough for one evening.

Co-owner Cara Borkes directed me to the end of the bar. I threw back the whiskey, then faced Cara straight on. She took my face in her hands - a deceptively gentle gesture -and delivered a swift smack across the left cheek. A cheer went up from the guys bellied up to the bar.

Hate Crimes are typically given on special occasions to friends of the bar or musicians who play there. It's one birthday treat you won't soon forget.
