About the brewery

Established in 1894, the Bavik Brewery sits in the Flanders region, near Belgium's western border with France and about 30 miles from the North Sea. It produces a range of traditional ales, table beers and other fermented concoctions. The two most common in Columbus are the Petrus Oud Bruin and the Petrus Aged Pale.

About the style

Petrus Oud Bruin, or "old dark," is a Flanders red ale, a style known and loved for its distinctly sour flavor. To make the Oud Bruin, brewers ferment beer with a special yeast strain that produces lactic acid - and let it age in oak barrels for 20 to 30 months. Afterward, the aged beer is mixed with young beer and bottled.

About the beer

A fruity and vinegary sourness takes center stage as you pop the cork and watch the dark-red elixir effervesce into your glass. A tulip or white-wine glass would be ideal. The beer pours with a tall but sparse head that quickly dissipates.

As you sip, the enticing tartness evokes grapes and green apples - almost like a drier version of hard cider or kombucha. Instead of showing off hops and malts, Oud Bruin has an oaky, wine-like character that makes it a welcome treat for beer fans in search of something unique.
