While “The Secret Circle” is may become a guilty pleasure, ABC’s “Revenge” is impossible to be seen as anything but an utterly ridiculous yet entertaining mess.

“Revenge” is supposedly a modern-day adaptation of “The Count of Monte Cristo,” but the similarities are at the basest level — somebody wants to get back at the people who ruined her life.

Emily Thorne (Emily VanCamp) moves into a spectacular house in the Hamptons, and while she appears to be a sweet, pretty girl, she actually has nefarious plans.

See, Emily’s father was framed for a crime and sent off to prison when she was a child. Now she’s back to get — wait for it — revenge.

The focus of Emily’s plot is on the Grayson family, particularly its matriarch, Victoria (Madeleine Stowe).

“Revenge” is filled with over-the-top acting in a convoluted pilot that’s unnecessarily confusing. But you get the basic idea, and even if you’re not sure how the characters are connected, they’re all preposterous and fun to watch.

I doubt “Revenge” is intentionally going for the silly soap opera play, but they sure nailed it.
