Here comes the adage about judging a book by its cover.

Here comes the adage about judging a book by its cover.

Watch a Mac Miller video and you might find the Pittsburgh youngster a bit too cute. Something doesn't sit right about a fresh-faced but not-that-innocent bro trying his hand as a backpack rapper.

To Miller's credit, even though his persona reeks of a campus party boy who keeps eye drops and Febreze on hand when Mom comes to visit, his music stands up admirably. His easygoing flow rarely feels fake or forced, his beat selection is canny and his charisma is potent. At South by Southwest, he paled in comparison to other rising titans such as Curren$y and Big K.R.I.T., but he's just too damn likeable to hate.

Maybe that's why Miller's show this Thursday with Casey Veggies sold out the Newport, got bumped to the LC and sold out that larger venue too.
