The stereotype about “conscious” underground rappers is that they’re all lectures, no fun. Which might be why party rappers generally draw bigger crowds; no one wants to go to the club and hear the equivalent of a Cornel West dissertation.
On stage at Bonnaroo 2009, Murs obliterated any such preconceptions with perhaps the most vibrant performance of the weekend. The crowd was bouncing almost as much as his dreads were.
His latest project, “Love & Rockets, Vol. 1: The Transformation,” pairs him with Ski Beatz, the producer who made his name laying tracks for Camp Lo and recently produced Curren$y’s ace “Pilot Talk” albums.
Murs, Ski and a slew of other performers (Tabi Bonney, McKenzie Eddy, Sean O’Connell, Da$h) will be at The Basement this Wednesday.
