In middle school, I listened like crazy to a CD called “The Guitar Trio” by Paco De Lucia, Al Di Meola and John McLaughlin. The dudes unfurled inspired acoustic instrumentals, putting their phenomenal dexterity to use in the name of musicality, not showmanship. (OK, maybe a little showmanship.)
Carrying their torch is Andy McKee, who headlines the Guitar Masters event at Lincoln Theatre this Saturday. The man does amazing things with a guitar. Watch some YouTube clips of McKee in action; it’s like he’s playing some other kind of instrument.
Yet like “The Guitar Trio,” McKee’s “Joyland” isn’t showy for showiness’ sake. It’s just beautiful music that will sound amazing echoing through that old concert hall.
