While shoving Reese's Peanut Butter Cups into my mouth for breakfast on a recent post-Halloween morning, I thought about the pure joy that comes with eating whatever the heck you want as an adult.

Two new dessert-oriented shops are cashing in on that feeling of glee by serving up desserts elaborate enough that they can easily substitute for a meal (but they both offer a few savory options for folks who prefer to eat in responsible dinner-then-dessert fashion).

Dane's Dessert Cafe is tucked away in an alley between the Cap and Short North proper, right across from MoJoe Lounge. L'Appat Patisserie, originally slated for a tiny space at the corner of Third and Long streets Downtown, opened in a neat old storefront in Olde Towne East, just a couple blocks down from the neighborhood-reviving double-punch of Yellow Brick Pizza and The Angry Baker.

Here's a look at them.

Dane's

Vibe: The bright and airy space has plenty of seating, so it's great for an afternoon pick-me-up of coffee and dessert - but it also caters to the late-night Short North crowd with late hours on Fridays and Saturdays.

Specialty: Made-in-house crepes and Belgian waffles with a variety of toppings, most with some combination of Johnson's ice cream and fresh fruit. Dane's also does ice cream sundaes and cakes by the slice.

Don't miss: The Rock the Boat crepe, slathered in Nutella and topped with scoops of chocolate and vanilla ice cream plus fresh-sliced strawberries and chocolate sauce.

L'Appat

Vibe: This upscale bakery has several white-tableclothed bistro tables, providing a fancy setting perfectly matched to the selection of European pastries with a decidedly international flair.

Specialty: Chaussons, little Parisian puff pastry pockets holding anything from apple and raspberry fillings to savory chicken, as well as African-inspired tarts.

Don't miss: Southern Sweet Potato Cake, like an oversized cupcake with a fantastic brown-sugar cream filling.
