Set in London's East End during the decade-plus of Thatcherism, we follow Freddie (Tom Hardy), a recently released felon, as he looks to make his mark in the criminal world.

"The Take" is a fairly traditional - and ultra-violent - gangster story, but Hardy is incredible and repugnant as a by-whatever-means-necessary criminal. Brian Cox and Shaun Evans add sturdy supporting roles.

If any of Hardy's venom here is present when he plays Bane in 2012's "The Dark Knight Rises," we're in for another horrifying villain from Christopher Nolan's Batman trilogy.
