The tired old cranberry-and-vodka trick grows up and gets a whole lot of sophistication with this concoction from Catherine Morel of DeepWood. The tartness of the cranberries is offset by the sweet-and-spicy nature of the apple cider.

Mistletoe

5 fresh cranberries

2 ounces cranberry-infused vodka (recipe follows, or find a prepared version at the store)

2 ounces local apple cider

1 ounce lemon juice

Muddle cranberries in a stemless wine glass. Add ice, vodka, apple cider and lemon juice. Shake and serve.

Cranberry Infused Vodka

1 pound fresh cranberries

1 750-ml bottle vodka

Pour vodka into a clean pitcher. Pulse the cranberries in a food processor a few times. They should be broken up a bit but not pasty. Place cranberries in vodka bottle using a funnel (you can also infuse the vodka in large mason jars if you have some handy). Pour vodka back into bottle (save any that won't fit for yourself). Cap the bottle and let stand for two weeks or until vodka tastes right to you. Strain cranberries from vodka before serving. Recipe adapted from foodchannel.com.
