What's it like working at Kobo?
It's a blast, man - always a great crowd, no matter who's playing. I'm in a band, and one of the reasons I bartend here is because [co-owner] Jacob Wooten wanted it to be a place for musicians to play, hang out and work.
Tell me about the band.
The band is She Bears. We've been together about four years. We're working on a new album.
It's kind of weird because we were all in Athens until 15 months ago, and we're adjusting to a new city. There have been some growing pains, but it's been fun and we really enjoy Columbus.
So everyone who works at Kobo is in a band.
Alex is the bassist in Phantods, and our door guy, Jason, is in a black metal band Bringers of Disease that just got honorable mention in Pitchfork's "Top 40 Metal Albums of the Year." His fiancee works here, too; she's a jazz singer.
I think that helps because we all know how bands want to be treated. I don't think we've had a band that hasn't said this is one of the coolest places they've stopped at.
Where do you go to drink?
Lately I've found myself at Ace of Cups. I really like that place and playing pingpong during the day. I hit up Ravari Room and a place called the Village Idiot that's by my house. Other than that I like to mix it up. Sometimes I just drive to a suburb and try a bar out there.
What do you drink?
I'm a whiskey drinker for the most part. My go-to is Maker's Mark, but Chivas Regal as a Scotch is really good. My stepdad drank it, and I guess it's just one of those things that gets passed down; you sneak a little bit as a kid and develop a taste for it.
I'm in love with Siberian Night by Thirsty Dog, a barrel-aged Russian imperial stout. I'm a sucker for dark, heavy beers.
If you could have a drink with anyone, living or dead, who would it be?
Probably Oprah Winfrey because my mom would high-five me and my stepdad would s--- himself.
