Staff Pick: Xerxes at Carabar

I don’t think there was ever a time when “emo” wasn’t a dirty word, but it used to imply much filthier music than the laminated teeny-bopper mall punk that now comes to mind. Xerxes is emo in that bygone sense — the sound of a nervous breakdown brutally erupting from the throat of a narrator at the end of his rope. The Louisville hardcore combo’s hostile uproar has heretofore yielded a series of sick 7-inches; their show Monday at Carabar launches a tour preparing the way for their first full-length, “Our Home Is a Deathbed,” recorded with Kevin Ratterman (Coliseum, My Morning Jacket). Prepare to be pummeled by their relentless onslaught, and possibly by bits of Calvin Philley’s intestines.
