TV review: Portlandia

From the December 27, 2011 edition

Before “Todd Margaret” is IFC other’s oddball, uncomfortable humor-based series “Portlandia.” While “Todd Margaret” is at its best when its leads are at their worst, “Portlandia” often tries too hard to be awkward.

Stars Fred Armisen (“Saturday Night Live”) and Carrie Brownstein (Sleater Kinney) seem like such likable people that their (somewhat serialized) sketch comedy show doesn’t need such cartoonishly awful characters.

I still audibly laughed at “Portlandia” a couple times, but it was the wackier, zany material. More “Put a Bird on It,” and less feminist bookstore owners.
