TV review: The Firm

For TV’s latest legal drama, NBC has adapted the movie adapted from the John Grisham novel.

Josh Lucas stars as lawyer Mitch McDeere, the same character Tom Cruise made famous in 1993 by running around a lot in a suit while carrying a briefcase. Molly Parker (“Deadwood”) plays Mitch’s wife. Working at Mitch’s office is his P.I. brother, Ray (Callum Keith Rennie), and Ray’s girlfriend, Tammy (Juliette Lewis).

The cast here is pretty strong, but the plot is a complete mishmash. “The Firm” throws a lot in the pilot: It’s part case-of-the-week procedural, part “Damages” conspiracy, and it also has a mob storyline and some family drama. All of it is just meh. That said, it’ll probably be a hit.
