Singer-songwriter Sharon Van Etten writes love songs, for sure, but they don’t exactly fall into the traditional Valentine’s Day vein. (“In my way, I say/ You’re the reason why I’ll move to the city/ You’re why I’ll need to leave”) All of this makes her V-Day appearance in the Wex’s black-box space only better, and hardly ironic. There is perhaps no cozier or more cloaked space in which to see a performer; it is truly intimate. Van Etten’s direct, fearless lyrics and minimalist delivery feel deeply personal through speakers. In person, it will be achingly romantic.
