The PBS documentary “Playing for Change” comprised producer Mark Johnson’s recordings of street musicians around the world. In 2009, many of the movie’s disparate performers joined forces for a showcase at South by Southwest. Now they’re on the road playing modern classics by the likes of Bob Marley and The Rolling Stones in the name of world peace and interpersonal connection.
The idea is that music has the power to transcend many of the other factors that tear people apart. As most music geeks know, it also has the power to passionately divide people, but hey! Humans indulge in far less constructive fantasies than this.
