Fashion: How to style varsity wear

Styling a letterman jacket or sweater is tough. Yeezy makes it look deceptively easy. The look can quickly go from looking city slick to That Guy who still talks about being prom king as he gets hammered on Applebee’s Mudslides.

If you’re planning on tackling this trend during the spring, let Duane Gamble Jr. be your coach. He’s the lead stylist at Jones Select, a local men’s custom clothing company, and he offered the following quick tricks for how to make the looks home runs.

Sweaters

“Start out with a fitted look,” Gamble said. “Nothing looks worse on a man than clothes that do not fit properly. Baggy clothing went out with the pager.”

Wear the sweater over a crisp white Oxford shirt and a bow tie. Wear skinny jeans rolled up to just above the ankle. For feet, pair with saddles or Sperrys, and skip the socks.

A more low-key look: Wear the sweater with a white V-neck T-shirt, flat-front khaki pants and a pair of all-white Stan Smiths.

Jackets

A fitted, untucked Oxford, bow tie and jeans look smooth. The real secret here is the footwear, Gamble said. Boots with the jeans tucked into them is Gamble’s favorite look. Or play it safe with some all-white sneakers.
