In 1968, esteemed salsa label Fania Records first united its star musicians as the supergroup Fania All-Stars. Three years later, after a sold-out performance at the Cheetah Lounge in New York, the All-Stars made it big. The group toured off and on for about 20 years, with various incarnations that included — among many others — Ruben Blades, Bobby Cruz and Jorge Santana, Carlos’ younger brother.
Our Latin Thing, an unaffiliated ensemble of 17 New York-based singers and musicians, pays tribute to the All-Stars by performing those musicians’ greatest hits. The group has previously swung through town to headline Festival Latino in 2010, and they return Friday to have the audience at the Capitol Theatre salsa-ing up a storm.
N’KLABE, a young Puerto Rican group that puts an urban twist on salsa, will kick off the night.
