Preview: Portugal. The Man at the Newport

Alaska is just as much a part of the Union as the other 49 states, but when you’re that far from the rest of the action, you can’t help but feel like outsiders. Perhaps that’s why John Gourley, now situated in Portland, sings with so much contempt: “Man, oh man, you think you’re so American.”

Geography aside, Gourley’s band Portugal. The Man practices a universal strain of prog-rock the likes of which has been inspiring fits of rapture in concert halls like the Newport for decades. Last year’s “In the Mountain In the Cloud” lays the groundwork for what might be a transcendent experience Wednesday.

The Lonely Forest and locals Bonneville open the show.
