With his first words on new album “Nothing’s Gonna Change the Way You Feel About Me Now,” Justin Townes Earle reminds us his dad is Steve Earle: “Hear my father on the radio singing, ‘Take me home again.’” It would feel like crass exploitation of the elder Earle’s legacy if his son didn’t render such concerns irrelevant, couching those lyrics in stunning, serene country-rock balladry.
The goodness keeps coming. From start to finish, these songs seem to flow directly from Earle’s consciousness to ours, easy and natural and right. It’s the kind of album that can become a constant companion, a gentle soundtrack for the deepest, darkest stretches of overnight drives. In contrast, Earle’s stop at The Bluestone this Friday with opener Tristen is one night only. —Chris DeVille
