Not all sister acts are the sort that send Whoopi Goldberg’s hands to the heavens. Some of them are dark, moody and British.
Such is the case with 2:54, one of the buzziest bands in the blogosphere. They’ll touch down at The Basement this Saturday in support of their self-titled Fat Possum debut.
The Thurlow sisters are tight with The xx, and their music strikes a similarly it’s-always-rainy-in-our-world pose. But opposed to The xx’s studied minimalism, 2:54 gets all Depeche Mode with lush synth landscapes. Unfortunately, there aren’t too many healthy songs grazing those pastures; theirs wouldn’t be my brooding ground of choice.
Widowspeak opens Saturday’s show.
