The new release by Rhett Miller, frontman for alt-country band The Old 97’s, serves up 13 smartly written songs about love. I should probably acknowledge that I adore pretty much any song Rhett Miller has released in the past dozen years. He’s just so good at what he does — simple, sometimes countrified pop ballads sung honestly and with warmth. When Miller sings, you feel like you know him. “The Dreamer” throws in some twangy steel guitar and back-up vocals by talented songstresses Rachael Yamagata and Rosanne Cash, which just makes it all the better.
