This one goes out to all the word nerds out there — kindred spirits who love to devour a book and then see Hollywood’s attempt to translate the author’s magic to the screen. Results are often mixed.
The Gateway Film Center has pulled together several examples of book-to-film successes (though that would be up for debate among bookworms), including the 2003 version of “Peter Pan” from “Muriel’s Wedding” director P.J. Hogan. A story that has been told many times over on film and stage leaps to fantastic, wild life in this adaptation that stars Jason Isaacs in dual roles as Mr. Darling and Captain Hook. “Peter Pan” is screening Saturday, June 23; Monday, June 25, and Wednesday, June 27.
Return this summer for adaptations of “Fantastic Mr. Fox,” “The Princess Bride,” “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang,” “Babe” and “Black Beauty.”
