Staff pick: Minus the Bear

From the July 12, 2012 edition

The Airborne Toxic Event is nice and all, but you really ought to show up at the LC in time for co-headliners Minus the Bear, a band with a cult following fierce enough that they don’t even really need a bear.

Their last album, “OMNI,” plunged the math-rock vets deeper into a ’70s-prog-meets-’80s-synth-pop daydream that approximates Peter Gabriel and Yes voyaging the high seas on Hall & Oates’ yacht. Judging from “Lonely Gun,” the first single from their upcoming “Infinity Overhead,” they’re continuing to sail boldly and unashamedly in that direction, even borrowing M83’s saxophone for the ride.
