When Bethany Cosentino and Bobb Bruno announced they’d record the next Best Coast album with Jon Brion, the genius producer and arranger who has lent orchestral pomp to everybody from Kanye West to Fiona Apple, my curiosity was piqued.
When I heard “The Only Place,” the chintzy California tourism ad of a first single, my expectations dipped.
But now that the album’s out, I’m awestruck. It’s simple and repetitive, but it sounds gorgeous and breezy, and it hits the requisite emotional triggers with alarming consistency. Even the title track is growing on me.
Monday at the Newport they’ll top a stellar lineup with Those Darlins and Way Yes.
